Gregory B. Smith
is a lifelong resident of Delaware County, and is a second-generation lawyer. A graduate of Indiana University (Bloomington), he holds degrees in Government and Law. He was admitted to the practice of law by the Indiana Supreme Court and by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana in 1971, and by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in 1999. He has served as a member of the Muncie City Council and also as a board member of the Muncie Indiana Transit System and Meals On Wheels of Muncie. Currently he is serving as attorney for the Delaware County Council and for the Muncie Indiana Transit System. During his more than 34 years of practice, Mr. Smith has handled a variety of matters, including substantial amounts of estate administration and estate planning. In addition to estate planning and probate matters, he handles civil litigation, real estate matters, and mechanic’s lien law. Recognizing the need to train others in his field, he teaches a course in estate planning and administration at Ball State University. About his law practice, Mr. Smith says: “People often don’t understand that lawyers are problem solvers, and people come to us when they have a problem to solve. I enjoy working with people to assist them in solving whatever problem they are facing. Sometimes the solution is easy, and sometimes it is difficult. No matter what, I try to keep in mind that to clients their problem is the most important in the world, otherwise they would not be talking to me about it. Abraham Lincoln said it best: ‘A lawyer’s time and advice are his stock in trade’.”
